Proposed Projects
Rebuild Anacapa Dock Building and Provide New Equipment to Host “Channel Islands Live”
Channel Islands Live, a distance learning program established through a partnership between the Ventura County Office of Education’s (VCOE) and the National Park Service (NPS), connects students and the public to park resources and their inherent value. Through a wireless project VCOE provides an innovative venue for a remotely-located national park to bring the islands to the people wherever they may be. It is a natural fit to bring live science and research from the park and marine sanctuary to California students, park visitors, and eventually to the public and students nationwide.
For the past 21 years the park has produced a live underwater interpretive program from the kelp forests at Anacapa Island. Channel Islands Live will deliver this remote program to expanded audiences on the mainland offering them a rare glimpse into the diverse marine ecosystem of the Channel Islands. These live interpretive dives are hosted out of a dock building on Anacapa Island that was built in 1985 and is in dire need of replacement. National Park Foundation settlement funds are currently available in a park account to fund part of the replacement costs for this building. The new structure will be designed to house the wireless project equipment and will also accommodate larger audiences on the island.
