Coastal Cleanup Day 2011

On Saturday, September 17, over 150 people signed up to pick up trash along the beaches of Ventura Harbor, adjacent to Channel Islands National Park Headquarters. Volunteers included groups from the Ventura College Biology Club, the Buena High School Environmental Club, Zeta Pi Omega sorority from CSU Channel Islands, Ventura County AGS Honor Society, two Brownie troops, and the Derby Knockers Roller Derby team as well as many families with young children.
This is the fourth year that The Foundation and Channel Islands National Park have hosted this very popular and successful event. This year April Raybuck headed up the National Park Service team of staff and volunteers to check in and weigh over 200 lbs of trash and 110 lbs of recyclable items. The recovered debris included many types of plastic dangerous to marine mammals, thousands of unsanitary cigarette butts, and numerous Styrofoam products.
The first two years that the Park and Foundation hosted Coastal Clean-up Day, the event was held on Santa Cruz Island. Due to high tides, the 2010 and 2011 event has taken place in front of Channel Islands National Park headquarters, enabling far more people to participate. We look forward to an even bigger turnout in 2012.
